She was born in Lakewood, but she grew up in Rumson, New Jersey. During the 1990s, she grew up in a mainly white town. Later in the 2000s, she went through racial teasing and bullying, but these influenced her advocacy for Asian representation in media.
She finished her schooling at Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School. In 2014, she was admitted to the Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers University, where she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in acting. During her time at Rutgers, she studied abroad in London, where she trained with Tim Carroll. At Shakespeare Globe Theatre, she performed in the production of “The Two Gentlemen of Verona”

After graduation, she received her first stage role as Nina in Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, a comedy play.
