Military Career
While she was serving her term in the Hawaii State legislature, her name was enlisted in the Hawaii Army National Guard in April 2003. Then, in July 2004, she was deployed to Iraq for a year tour, where she served as a specialist with the medical company, 29th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, and 29th support battalion. In Iraq, she also worked in the logistical support area of Anaconda when her tour was about to end in 2005.
In 2005, she received a Combat medical badge for her participation in combat operations under hostile enemy Fire in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom III. Further, she was also rewarded with the “Meritorious Service Medal” from the United States and the “German Armed Forces Badge” for military proficiency.
