Early Life & Educational Qualifications

He was born in an Egyptian Refugee Camp. His parents moved from their motherland, South Sudan, due to conflict, to Egypt, before settling in Australia in 2005. He grew up in Victoria, where he was first introduced to football by his brother Kuol Kuol. He was trained along with his brother Alou and Teng Koul.

In the early years, he started his football career as a junior for the Shepparton Soccer Club. Then he associated with the Victoria-based Soccer club Goulburn Valley Suns. Here he got training in the youth and senior ranks till he turned 15.

While he was pursuing his football career, meanwhile, he continued his education at the Central Coast Sports College.

He was born to South Sudanese parents, Mawien and Antonietta Koul. However, they were moved to Egypt and then settled permanently in Victoria, Australia in 2005.

Early Career at Central Coast Mariners

In January 2021, Garang Kuol started his career with the Central Coast Mariners Academy. He followed in his brother’s footsteps, named Alou Kuol.

At the age of 16, he made his debut in the NPL senior squad because of the unavailability of A-League players.

In December 2021, he made his debut for the first time for Central Coast Mariners in an FFA Cup Match against APIA Leichhardt. Coming off the bench, he scored just seven minutes into his debut.

Then on 5 April 2022, he made his A-League Men debut against Wellington Phoenix, scoring a goal in a 5-0 victory.

Breakthrough

He scored 3 goals in his first six A-League Men Matches, which helped Mariners to secure a Final berth.

He was selected as one of the “Commissioner’s Picks” in the A-League All Stars Game against Barcelona in 2022.

For the first time, he signed his professional contract with the Mariners during European interest in 2022.

For Heart of Midlothian (Scotland), he played temporarily in January 2023 and scored his first goal against Rangers in stoppage time.

He played temporarily for FC Volendam (Netherlands) for the 2023-24 season. He scored in his second start, which helped him to become the youngest foreigner to score in Volendam’s history. After experiencing demotion from Volendam, he went back to Newcastle United in May 2024.

 

International Career

He represented Australia at the under-20 and under-23 levels. He played in the Maurice Revello Tournament, WAFF U-23 and AFC U-23 Asian Cup.

After that, when he was 18 years and 10 days old, he made his debut in the senior team for the Socceroos.

Then he got selected for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, which made him the youngest Australian ever to play at a World Cup.

He also appeared in the knockout match against Argentina. He became the youngest player since Pelé to feature in a World Cup knockout round.
